Varanasi

Steeped in centuries of tradition, Benaras Brocades are recognised throughout the globe as a sign of opulence and elegance. Through the decades, Brocade has been worn by nobility across cultures.A Brocade fabric incorporates extra weft  of different coloured silk or metallic yarns which are woven into the warp and weft to create ornate elaborate patterns, on a Jacquard loom. Using techniques that are as varied as Tanchoi, brocades, Khinkhwab and Gyasar.

These weaves and skills are unique to the region of Varanasi or Benaras, situated along the banks of the river Ganges. The constant paradox of exquisite creations on the looms and performing last rites on the banks of the holy river Ganges is an encapsulation of life cycle itself. A land where spiritualism and materialism enchantingly co-exist.While in Benaras do enjoy the Ganga aarti at dusk & dawn, authentic Indian snacks & condiments such as chaat, kachori, paan and the various bhojanalaya serving authentic food cooked by the holy men.

Kadwa weave epitomizes Indian handloom artistry, intricately crafting motifs with precision using supplementary threads. The extraweft threads, responsible for designs wound in sirkies go around and get interlaced with the base. Each part of the design can have different textures and color details, as each of them are controlled by individual sirkies. Opulent Kadwa sarees are a testament to timeless beauty and craftsmanship.

This heavy brocade in silk, viscose with gold and silver zari is woven on the pitloom in a width of only 23” and a weaver can produce just a few inches in a day, to a maximum length of three-and-a-half metres to maintain the tautness of the warp. The elaborate patterns are created in kadwa, where multiple wefts are interlaced to create a pattern. Traditionally woven with large heraldic, monastic and mythical motifs, typically used in Tibetan ceremonial costumes and ritualistic hangings.

Tanchoi, originating in 19th-century China and arrived in India via the 'choi' brothers. This intricate craft uses single/double warp with multiple colored wefts, creating exquisite designs like florals, bird motifs, and geometric patterns. Softness and excellent drape due to the satin weave made Tanchoi famous in Varanasi, synonymous with Banarasi weaving and impeccable artistry.
